One of the topics we always talk about in our seminars is how to calculate the cost of ownership of a Piper airplane. Many people think that aviation is a very expensive hobby. And in some cases it is. But in the big picture, aviation isn't that different from the other pursuits people engage in.

Let's talk about boating. I've been boating all my life. Boats cost money. In fact, I was looking for a new houseboat for well over $100,000 and some retail. There is also fuel consumption, extra boat fees, and a slip fee if you keep it on the lake. In my neighborhood you can rent a 12ft x 28ft slip for 6 months for about $3,000. $500 per month. And if you have a bigger boat and include electricity and water, it will cost a lot more. Compare that to hangar rentals and many of us can fly almost year-round. The flying season can be the same as the sailing season (12 months), but in most cases the flying season is longer than the sailing season.

Think boats aren't good comparisons? Consider buying a new Harley. Sure, you can get them for less than $10,000, but the average price for a fully loaded bagger bike is closer to $30,000. For that kind of money, you can buy a Cessna 172 or a Piper Cherokee 140. And I can still fly all year round.

What I understand is that everything costs money. It's all about what you buy, how much you use and what your attitude towards cost is. Entering aircraft ownership with an open mind and setting some basic criteria can make it an affordable experience. Education is key. I wouldn't be surprised if you know what you're getting into and understand where your cost of ownership lies. Oh, and you won't feel guilty when someone says, "How can you buy an airplane?" (Besides, it's none of their business anyway). In my previous column, I wrote about whether to buy or rent (July 2018 issue). I think ownership starts there.

Unless you fly a lot or are in a financial situation where you can afford a Cessna 150 or Cherokee 140, leasing is an option. The same goes for the Flying Club. Leasing or buying issues have plagued the airline industry for years. As a pilot, renter and owner, I have no doubts. the answer is

, you should always buy. This is your only option! But ask the owner of an aircraft that has just suffered a catastrophic failure costing tens of thousands of dollars or more and they will tell you that leasing will be an option at some point.

Don't feel like you're not a pilot just because you don't have an aircraft! The goal is to fly whenever you can, and if renting or joining a flying club is the way to go, that's still part of aviation. There would be no general aviation market today without people renting aircraft. But if you already own a Cessna 150 or Cherokee 140, how do you know when to upgrade to a bigger, faster one? Perhaps the answer is that you shouldn't do that, or you may need to rent one for occasional needs.

Buying an aircraft (either your first or fifth) is an emotional affair. Emotions are one of the major factors that get buyers into financial trouble. The excitement of ownership is right there with buying a new home. Buying all the aircraft can be an exciting time. That's also a very big financial commitment. For these reasons (emotional and financial), we believe it's important for buyers to plan ahead and decide what they can buy and how much they can afford. Basically, I believe there are three parts to cost of ownership calculations.

Variable costs are probably the most important of the three. Twin-engine aircraft are a good example to illustrate this. You can buy a really cheap and complex twin-engine aircraft, bundle it up, and not insure it, and you may not be able to afford to operate it. I once had the opportunity to purchase a very inexpensive Cessna 401, but my mechanic estimated that it would cost over $50,000 a year to maintain and operate. Ouch.
